Alexandria, VA – May 11, 2026 – The Vision Council Foundation is calling on eyecare providers, optical retailers, and members of the eyewear and eyecare industry to support the 2026 National Sunglasses Day celebration. Recognized each year on June 27, National Sunglasses Day is a nationwide effort to elevate UV-protective eyewear as a daily wellness essential.
Just as sunscreen is a daily essential for skin protection, sunglasses are also vital in shielding the eyes from harmful UV rays. Prolonged sun exposure can cause photokeratitis, essentially a sunburn on the eyes, and increases the chances of cataracts or eye cancers. According to The Vision Council’s 2025 Market inSights with 2026 Forecast report, more than 168 million Americans, or 63% of the U.S. adult population, wear non-prescription sunglasses, leaving more than 37% of adults without adequate protection.
“Eyecare providers and optical professionals are the most trusted voices when it comes to protecting patients’ vision and long-term eye health,” said Ashley Mills, CEO of The Vision Council and The Vision Council Foundation. “National Sunglasses Day gives our industry a focused moment to champion a simple, powerful message: wear your sunglasses every day. This year, we’ve made it as easy as possible to participate in the celebration, and we hope practices and businesses across the country will join in and make this campaign their own.”
