National Sunglasses Day 2026 Wrap-Up

National Sunglasses Day 2026 is a wrap! Thanks to an incredible network of members and partners, we brought UV eye protection to fitness classes, an outdoor market, a trade show, and 50+ optical shops across the United States, making the case that protecting your eyes is a core part of a healthy lifestyle. Here’s how we did it.

In-Person Activations and Education

Switchback Spring

The Vision Council Foundation exhibited at Switchback Spring, a gathering for the outdoor industry community, weeks ahead of National Sunglasses Day in New Orleans. The Foundation team had conversations with retailers about how sunglasses fit into their spaces and encouraged them to run promotions or celebrate National Sunglasses Day in their shops. Member-donated frames filled the Foundation booth and featured ways to merchandise sunglasses in store (keep an eye out on our social channels this summer for a chance to win some of these sunglasses in a social media giveaway!).

Outdoor Fitness Events in NYC

This summer, we are hosting two outdoor fitness classes in New York City in celebration of National Sunglasses Day, making UV protection part of the workout. Girls Who Meet will host a Pilates class in Central Park in celebration of National Sunglasses Day, and the Foundation is sponsoring an outdoor yoga class hosted at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Attendees will walk away with donated sunglasses, plus wellness extras from Croakies, David Protein and fine’ry fragrance. Between the two classes, we will reach more than 150 people who are already investing in their health and are now encouraged to think about their eyes as part of the picture.

Community Farmers Market

The week before National Sunglasses Day, the Foundation set up at the Four Mile Run farmers’ market in Alexandria, Virginia, and talked about eye health with neighbors out for their Sunday errands. Visitors picked up educational materials about UV protection, and both adults and children left with a free pair of donated sunglasses and eyewear accessories.

Education and Industry Outreach

The campaign extended well past our in-person events. This year, we developed educational toolkits and promotional materials that gave optical professionals the resources to carry the National Sunglasses Day message directly to their customers. We also mailed educational brochures to more than 50 optical shops across the United States — putting UV safety information in the hands of the eyecare community nationwide and making it easy for retailers to start the conversation at the point of sale. The Foundation also sent UV educational materials and National Sunglasses Day buttons to Camelbeach Outdoor Waterpark to encourage safe UV practices while having fun in the sun.

Consumer and Industry Research

Our latest report, Focused inSights: Beyond UV Awareness, released ahead of National Sunglasses Day and dug into the habits and attitudes of more than 600 American adults who don’t wear sunglasses. Thanks to HOUSE of MODO’s generous sponsorship, we made the report freely available to everyone — members and non-members alike can access here. The findings give the industry a sharper picture of why a meaningful segment of consumers still isn’t reaching for sunglasses, and what it might actually take to change that.

Partnerships with Industry Allies

National Sunglasses Day can make an even greater impact when the right partners show up, and this year, they did. The Skin Cancer Foundation brought their authority in sun safety to help connect the dots between UV exposure and overall health. AccuWeather reinforced the everyday reality of UV risk, reminding consumers that the sun doesn’t take days off. And the United Opticians Association stepped up to carry the campaign across the full optical community, highlighting the role that opticians play in helping people find the right sunglasses to fit their face, style and lifestyle.

Product Donors

The success of our National Sunglasses Day activations depends on our industry’s support and partnership. A huge thank-you to the following members and brands for donating sunglasses and wellness products for our events and summer giveaways:

Prioritize UV Safety Beyond National Sunglasses Day

National Sunglasses Day may be over, but UV rays aren’t taking the summer off, and neither are we. UV exposure is a year-round concern, and eye protection deserves a permanent spot in the wellness conversation. The Vision Council keeps evergreen resources on eye health and UV safety here. Share them with your customers, your community, and anyone who’s been leaving the house without sunglasses.

From all of us at The Vision Council Foundation, thank you for making National Sunglasses Day 2026 one to remember.
