Guide Spotlights How Parents Can Help Spot and Address Childhood Myopia

Alexandria, Va., September 4, 2024—As tens of millions of kids return to school across the United States, The Vision Council Foundation has compiled some of the best informational and educational resources for parents and teachers regarding myopia—the increasingly common pediatric eye condition that has reached epidemic proportions across the U.S.

In December, the organization revealed that over half of parents who had a child diagnosed with myopia said that was discovered because of a routine eye exam (Focused inSights 2023: Parental Perspectives on Myopia). This prompted the creation of the “Ultimate Guide to Kid’s Eye Health and Myopia Management This School Year” that points caregivers toward explainer videos, a digital classroom simulator, vision curriculum kits, doctor locators, and more at https://thevisioncouncilfoundation.org/category/community/.

“Protecting children’s eyes is an essential step to support their future, but for busy families, ensuring this happens can feel overwhelming. Our goal is to make vision care accessible and straightforward,” said Ashley Mills, CEO of The Vision Council and The Vision Council Foundation. “Whether caregivers are unsure where to begin or want a deeper understanding of potential vision issues, The Vision Council Foundation offers resources to simplify the process.”

In addition to its back-to-school tools, the Foundation website provides year-round children’s vision and education guidance for parents. Topics such as eyecare terminology, the importance of eye exams, what happens during an eye exam, and types of eyewear for sports and activities are presented through straightforward descriptions.
