Summer went by in the blink of an eye, and just like that– it’s back-to-school season! Here at The Vision Council Foundation, we’ve rounded up some resources to ensure you’re equipped with the information you need to know to protect your children’s eye health this school year.
Prevent Blindness
Prevent Blindness is the championing organization behind August being declared as Children’s Eye Health and Safety month. In an effort to educate parents, professionals and policy makers on the important role vision and eye health plays in a child’s development, learning ability and social engagement, the organization advocates for early detection and treatment. Prevent Blindness’s National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health (NCCVEH) teamed up with the National Head Start Association to issue their free online toolkit, Small Steps for Big Vision, where you will find fact sheets, downloadable graphics, informative videos and more.
CooperVision
CooperVision recently launched their myopia (nearsightedness) consumer awareness campaign, “MiSight Today. Anything Tomorrow.” The initiative stresses the importance of scheduling eye exams before kids head back to school to address any changes in their eyesight. Head to the MiSight website to hear testimonials from MiSight 1 Day patients, watch educational videos on myopia and even check out a classroom simulator so you can see what living with uncorrected myopia is like.
EyeMed Vision Care ®
EyeMed is celebrating Children’s Eye Health and Safety month and the back-to-school season with the launch of their new, interactive Vision Curriculum Kits. The first kit available in the three-part series focuses on the anatomy of the eye and teaches grade-school kids how the different structures of the eye work together. The free kit, complete with eye healthy tips and activities, can be used in the classroom or at home ahead of an eye exam to help your child prepare.
American Academy of Ophthalmology
The American Academy of Ophthalmology is a trusted professional medical association of eye physicians and surgeons in the optical field. Check out their myopia hub to read more about the symptoms, causes, treatment and prevention of nearsightedness.
Zeiss
Ahead of this back-to-school season, Zeiss Vision Care conducted a nationwide survey of parents of children 18 years old and under about behaviors and concerns related to their children’s eye health. Top findings revealed that eighty-two percent are somewhat concerned about the impact of digital eye strain, and parents are practicing proactive behaviors that could protect their children’s eye health in the long run.
